Moon Dogs Series – do we really need another phonic series?

Some may question the need for yet another phonic series.  Well, the Moon Dogs series is different. Tam has a Nap pages 2 and 5Drum Sticks pages 1 and 6It really offers the older, struggling reader a chance for a fresh start from the very beginning.  And I mean – the VERY beginning.  This series is aimed at older pupils who, mid-programme you discover, do not know the sounds of the alphabet.

Like in our Dandelion Launcher Series, Moon Dogs assumes that the reader is an absolute beginner.  It introduces the sounds of the alphabet, a few letters at a time.  While the reader is securing the correct pronunciation, they have an opportunity to practise blending those sounds in CVC words.   One to two lines of text on the page ensure that reading success can be achieved within each reading session.

While the phonic progression is highly structured and the text controlled to words the pupil can now decode, the illustrations and stories are fresh with a contemporary look.  Most importantly, pupils aged 8-14 would be willing to engage and even enjoy them.

This series is the answer to teachers from mainstream and SEN settings who ask, “Yes, but what comes before that for my absolute beginner pupil?”
