English spelling is complex and one of the hardest things kids need to learn is that sounds in words (phonemes) can be spelled in different ways. Here are some FREE and fun phonic posters that show alternative spellings within a sentence. Each sentence focuses on one sound, e.g. the spellings ai, ay, a-e, ea and a of the sound /ae/. Print and use as a display in a classroom or use it in a phonics activity to support writing or to support home learning. Use them to point out which is the correct spelling in a word, e.g. <ai> is the correct spelling for the word ‘rain’ like in the word ‘snail’ in the poster.
